Sophie Blackall on Etsy

After stumbling upon Sophie Blackall's work in Lucky, I had to check it out on Etsy.  Sophie is an Aussie editorial artist that has been in Brooklyn since the early 2000.  After illustrating for musicians and such, she started interpreting "Missed Connections" when men and women wish they had introduced themselves to someone who had caught their eye.  Maybe it's the hopeless romantic in me, but I am really into Sophie Blackall right now.            xx

"Messages in bottles, smoke signals, letters written in the sand; the modern equivalents are the funny, sad, beautiful, hopeful, hopeless, poetic posts on Missed Connections websites. Every day hundreds of strangers reach out to other strangers on the strength of a glance, a smile or a blue hat. Their messages have the lifespan of a butterfly. I'm trying to pin a few of them down."

You were the gorgeous brunette sleeping on the train. I was the guy sitting next to you. I just wanted to apologize for my repeated lack of consciousness onto your shoulder, we both got off at flatbush. Hit me back up if you think this is you.

You wore an awesome color changing dress to the BBQ on Skillman Ave in Williamsburg, but someone spilled wine on it.
You left too quickly...I'd like to see you again.

Fake It part 1

With new summer buys showing up everywhere, the uptown picks will be (and always have been) knocked off.  I usually hate imitation, especially if the product has been made in a sweatshop by hungry children, but I can't say that I complain too much about these.  To go cheaper and not splurge is always the second choice, but we can't always get what we want (unless it's on sale or the last one in our size).  Having a young, twenty something budget can be very discouraging unless you are a trust fund baby or a socialite. So, go on over to American Apparel and buy the real Miu Miu platforms when you can actually afford 5 pair of Miu Miu platforms. "Fake it till you make it"                    xx

bananas

It has been officially confirmed that stylist, and my own personal Jesus Christ, Rachel Zoe, has given birth to her spawn of fashion.  Reports of her and Rodge going into labor came out two days ago, and her publicist finally broke the news that baby Skyler Morrison Berman was born today.   He even has a chic name!  I cannot wait to see what this little nugget looks like in scarves and man satchels.  xx

The Romantics

After seeing Katie Holmes, Josh Duhamel and Anna Paquin film scenes on People.com last year, I was very curious about the film, The Romantics, they were making together.  I waited and waited for it to come to theaters, but quickly forgot about it after never even seeing a trailer.  Last week my baby sister started referencing it, and the image stills popped back into my mind.  Thank god for RedBox being on every corner and East Tennessee not being into indie flicks.  After watching the film, I put life into perspective and pictured what my friends and I would be doing a few years down the road.  It's odd to think time is moving so quickly, and if you do not enjoy it, it will most definitely pass you by.

Seven best friends, dubbed the Romantics, reunite for a wedding.  Katie Holmes and Anna Paquin's odd frenimey relationship is shone as Lila (Paquin) asks Laura (Holmes) to be her maid of honor.  The other friends/cast include Malin Ackerman, Jeremy Strong, Adam Brody, Elijah Wood and many notable others to add.  Their interactions are extremely believable and almost relatable.  I personally loved Malin's character as she fought adulthood and remained the lovable, disheveled party girl making everyone smile.  It's an all around kooky, almost bazaar story line, as the rehearsal dinner and wedding day play out.  The rivalry and friendship cross lines in more ways than one.               xx

PS I Made This

So, after starting new adventures in the world of crafting, I have attempted sewing.  I often find myself craving certain pieces or different versions of already achieved designers' work, but never thought about actually pursuing my idea of making exactly what I wanted.  I was given a few vintage patterns a few years ago, and this initially inspired me.  After asking for some help, buying a sewing machine, wandering around the fabric shop for hours and attempting a skirt and another dress, I have finally produced something worth wearing.  Now, if it will only get warmer than 60 degrees!  After researching Halston Heritage and finding a dress that I had to have, I decided to lengthen the ruffle on the vintage pattern so it would resemble the pink beauty.  Hopefully there will be more designs in my future. xx

wearing of the green

St. Patricks day is here again, and yes, it's time to drink, but what will you wear?  Any shade of green will do- from a lot to a little.  Mix tops with anything from a black mini to flare jeans, and dress up stand out pieces with everyday accessories so you do not look like a leprechaun.  A loose white t or denim jacket is the perfect add on to tone it down a bit.  Subtle green extras, like shoes, handbags and jewelry, are key if you're not celebrating too hard.  "Taataataataaataaa" is how its said in Dublin, or so I hear.    xx

Designer Spotlight: Halston Heritage

I have recently become very obsessed with the throwback collection, and can't stop looking at the different images on Net-A-Porter and Niemans. One of my first memories of the hip diffusion line is Carrie Bradshaw in the white jersey dress with the Mykita & Bernard Willhelm’s Franz aviators. The mother label, Halston, launched the line in 2009 and continues to reinvent its own archive pieces. As the retro 70s looks keep showing up from the runway to the department stores, Halston keeps producing it's iconic Studio 54 glamour. The tailoring is perfection and the jersey, often one shoulder, drape gowns are on my mind 24/7. Sarah Jessica Parker was also named creative director for the brand after donning a slew of the gowns in round two of the namesake SATC movies. I believe she has one of the best eyes in the biz and Heritage will continue to flourish.

Fashion Week Roundup: Paris

Four weeks to the day, NYC-London-Milan and now Paris, the fashion weeks have concluded. It has been a monumental season, as John Galliano, creative director at Dior, was ousted for being a Hitler fan and anti-Semite. Now, the big question is, will Riccardo Tisci from Givenchy take over? Hate is never acceptable, and I'm sure he's faced his own ridicule for resembling a homosexual Pirate with his clothing choices, but it is always sad to see a brilliant and influential designer go. For the actual ready-to-wear looks, Fall 11', as previously stated, is still rolling with the 70's vibe. Karlie Kloss was still a fixture, and up and comer Arizona Muse was literally everywhere. Chloe produced wide leg, tailored jean trousers with python print in almost each look. Balmain's creative director,Christophe Decarnin, failed to show up, and word on the street is he's been committed as he battles depression. There was nothing crazy about his detailed sequined and beaded mini dresses. Hocus Pocus hats were huge at Lanvin, along with his signature one sleeved dresses. Shapes were a little off at Stella, but her oversized gold looks gleamed and the polka dots were a bit more wearable. YSL was a wintery mix, with a dash of purple, but ended with white hot jumpsuits and gowns. Valentino's palette resembled a sheer rose as the girls traveled down the wooded runway. The stunning gowns at Elie Saab will definitely be snatched up for appearances and shows. The deep cuts, high slits and added belts made this season one of my favorites. The collection at Alexander McQueen lived up to the legacy, and Sarah Burton created an ice queen-esque theme that will continue the heritage. Has Kate Middleton really chosen McQueen as her wedding designer?? The aforementioned Christian Dior's showcase had a throwback bohemian feel with velvet mini britches and cascading chiffon. Very pirates of the Carribean. Karl left show goers with thoughts of boy meets girl in dark gothic forest with Dr. Martin almost looking boots leading their way. And last, but definitely not least, Marc Jacobs capped off fashion week with french maids in cut out leather brocade and Kate Moss, in the flesh, smoking a cig while closing the show. Naomi also walked with all the new baby supermodels of world. No word of rage or phones being thrown.

Love Her Look

Nicole Richie has hit Paris for fashion week and has been seen front row at Givenchy and at after parties with Derek Blasberg (yes, of course, I stalk his twitter). She was also spotted shopping in all black looking more high fashion French than her usual laid back LA boho. She came out empty handed while stopping in a shop in Saint Germain. With her already covetable bag (not to mention the 40+ vintage Chanels she mentioned in Lucky) collection, I'm sure she isn't too disappointed. J'adore that jacket!

Fashion Week Roundup: Cross' the Pond

Fashion Week has hit London and Milan, and it is almost finished in Paris. A feminine 70s feel continues to be a staple for many houses, including Gucci, and colors are very vibrant at Osman, too. Skin is showing while sheer, printed skirts flow at Pucci. The iconic patterns are floor length and extremely green. Handbags are big at Burberry, and the flares are paired perfectly with oversized military embellishments. Mulberry is a mix of English Countryside and Connecticut day wear, while Issa is fit for a princess with cinched waists perfectly fitting outerwear. Sequins, opaque tights and geographic tops keep Cheap& Chic young, while fur is used sparingly. Prada has muted colors with fur stoles and belted, oversized coats. Fall is looking mighty finnnne xx
